Hunter Research is an acknowledged regional expert on canals and manmade waterways. Our firm’s historians and industrial archaeologists have decades of experience evaluating historical significance and integrity, as well as assisting architects and engineers with preservation, rehabilitation and reconstruction plans that avoid or minimize adverse effects. We have conducted work on the Delaware & Raritan Canal in central New Jersey for the New Jersey Water Supply Authority and the New Jersey State Park Service, the Morris Canal in northern New Jersey for various county and local governments planning park and greenway improvements, the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn for Region 2 of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal for the Philadelphia and Baltimore Districts of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the three-tiered waterpower raceway system at the Great Falls of Paterson National Historical Park for the City of Paterson and the National Park Service.
