Frank Sinatra Post Office
City of Hoboken, Hudson County, New Jersey
Since 2014 Hunter Research, Inc. has been the cultural resources consultant for a private-public partnership that is currently redeveloping the Frank Sinatra Post Office in Hoboken, New Jersey. The city’s central downtown post office was built in the Beaux Arts style in 1930-1931. The project involves upgrading the post office for continued service, preserving its historic architectural character, while developing its parking lot for an adjoining new high-rise waterfront hotel with spectacular views across the Hudson River to midtown Manhattan. Hunter Research has coordinated among the U.S. Postal Service, the City of Hoboken’s Historic Preservation Commission, the New Jersey Historic Preservation Office and the developer. Extensive background research was completed on the history of the post office, a Phase IA archaeological assessment was performed, assistance was provided to the architect and developer in conceptualizing a new high-rise that would be architecturally compatible with the historic post office, and a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was drafted and negotiated.
